That's what my dad called me—the only Black student in an all-white Mississippi elementary school. In a time when standing out could be dangerous, I walked into that classroom with courage, my parents' strength behind me.
From that moment of standing out, I learned to stand up.
At 68, I turned that childhood nickname into FLYOLOGY—a movement empowering YOU to embrace your authentic self. It's where 'ology' (the study of) meets 'fly' (stylish, bold, self-assured).

What Is FLYOLOGY?
Flyology is the study of being 'fly'—confident, unique, and unapologetically you.
Stand Up. Stand Out. Show Up.
It's where 'ology' (the study of) meets 'fly' (stylish, bold, self-assured), creating a movement that empowers you to embrace your authentic self.
How It Began: A Fly in a Bowl of Buttermilk
Growing up in Columbia, Mississippi, I gained my nickname from my Dad: "a fly in a bowl of buttermilk."
Why?
Because I was the only Black student at an all-white elementary school. My dad was concerned for my safety in a time when justice was unfair because of the color of our skin. But with my parents' strength and unity behind me, I walked into that classroom with courage and pride.
That moment in the bowl of buttermilk became my emergence—and the beginning of Flyology.

About Our Founder
From that bowl, I emerged. Now, I'm here to help you rise too.
Hi, I'm Darlene Phillips, the heart behind FLYOLOGY.
I'm a retired escrow professional and the first Black escrow officer in Solano County, California—another moment of being "a fly in a bowl of buttermilk."
I'm also a certified life transformational coach, alopecia advocate, and the woman who turned a childhood nickname into a global mission.
My journey includes joy, loss, laughter, bold choices, and a whole lot of faith. Looking back, I now understand what my Daddy saw in me that day—not just a girl who stood out, but a girl destined to stand up and lift others.
At 69, I'm just getting started. FLYOLOGY is proof that new beginnings have no expiration date.
